Contained Memory
SVA Flatiron Gallery, New York, NY, US
March 9 - April 6, 2019
School of Visual Arts presents “Contained Memory,” an exhibition of multidisciplinary works by SVA students. Curated by Claudia Delaplace, MA Curatorial Practice fellow, the exhibition will be on view from Saturday, March 9, through Saturday, April 6, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
“Contained Memory” explores the keeping of memories and time—of transforming various everyday items and mundane concepts into an archive. The artists in the exhibition, through their individual practices, create archival memories about collecting dreams (Yaxu Han, MFA Design), dissecting and analyzing the Statue of Liberty (Owen Keogh, MFA Fine Arts) or referencing traditional Iranian craft-making (Sarah Malekzadeh, MFA Fine Arts). Other works represent personal and intimate images of New York City (Jackie Mak, BFA Photography and Video), use found material such as cassette tapes (Yam Chew Oh, MFA Fine Arts) and capture the ongoing decomposition of fruits and vegetables (Ahree Song, MFA Fine Arts).
Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA students to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
